How to Care for Summer Hair
Summer brings beautiful weather, vacation, and sunlight. With the sunlight there’s also heat and maybe you’ve never thought about how that heat affects your hair. There are different ways to protect your hair from the summer sun and dry or humid weather. Here are a few tips to try out,
- Limit the Amount of Sun Your Hair Sees
Just like it’s important to protect your skin from the sun, it is also important to protect your hair. Wearing a hat or hair scarf can protect your hair from harmful UV rays and retain moisture. Hair gets drier in summer due to the heat and humidity. Your scalp can also become dry and burnt so it is important to give it proper protection since it regulates your hair’s natural oils.
- Have Loose Updos
If hair is tied too tight, it can cause breakage, splitting, and hair weakness. Adding this tension and the heat of the sun can create a disaster. That’s why loose braids and gently tied ponytails are a better alternative. These types of hairstyles can even add another layer of protection to the scalp by layering hair over the scalp.
- Fight the Frizz
Hair becomes frizzy in the summer because the follicles are reaching into the atmosphere, trying to find moisture. Two of the main factors that cause frizz are friction and moisture in the air. This is why frizziness gets worse in the summer humidity. An easy way to control frizz is to mix argan oil with water to create a light spray for your hair. This adds moisture when needed and controls frizz to the core.
- Go Easy on Heat Styling
It is important to protect your hair from the sun but it is also important to protect it from other direct heat sources. This is usually true year round but especially in the summer when the air around you is already humid and dry. Once or twice a week, give your hair a break from blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons. Your hair may air dry better in the summer so extra heat isn’t necessary. Too much heat can stress out your hair and cause frizz to get worse.
Summer is a great time to enjoy the weather and all it has to offer. Always protect your hair from the heat and your locks will be sure to thank you.
